Ingredients
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for greasing the dish
4 cups cubed day-old French or Italian bread
2 cups diced cooked ham
1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
3 large eggs, lightly beaten
2 cups whole milk
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Directions
Heat the oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly butter a shallow 2-quart rectangular baking dish. Spread the remaining butter thinly on the slices of baguette. Line the baking dish with half the baguette slices, butter side down.
