Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
Add the onion and garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
Stir in the cumin, coriander and cayenne pepper and cook for 1 minute more.
Add the red lentils and vegetable broth and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes or until the lentils are tender.
Add the chickpeas and simmer for 10 minutes more or until heated through.
Taste and adjust seasonings as desired before serving.
